Scherben bringen Glück! Breaking ceramics the night before the wedding is a German tradition called Polterabend. Anything and everything from sinks, flowerpots, mugs, plates, etc. are thrown onto the ground. The couple is tasked with sweeping up the shards (in this case, Vicky was given a broom to sweep up while Norman had a toothbrush to clean!) - cleaning up the aftermath demonstrates to the couple that they will have to work together in difficult times.
